It is said to be high in proteins and rich in multiple kinds of minerals and vitamins. It can be a great addition to a healthy diet. However, there are numerous ways to cook ham. You can find pre-cooked ham at your local stores, which means you won’t have to go through the process of cleaning and marinating.
Smoking a pre-cooked ham
Smoking a pre-cooked ham does not take long as you don’t have to wait for long hours as the ham cooks inside the electric smoker. Technically, pre-cooked hams that we buy from our local stores are not ready to eat; they require a bit of cooking, but they are already seasoned. You might find the details of seasonings that are used in the ham on the packaging. But, you always have the choice of using your preferred glazes and veggies to add with the smoked ham.
There are different types of hams that you can find at your local stores:
- Whole ham
- Ham steaks
- Ham hock
- Green/fresh ham
- Picnic ham
- Breakfast ham
- Smoked ham
- Boneless/bone-in ham
- Cured ham
Here, we will be discussing the required cooking time and a few tips for a pre-cooked smoked ham.
Things to consider
First of all, your electric smoker has to be well-equipped to fulfill the requirements of smoking a ham. You do not have to buy an expensive one but good enough to perform well.
To enhance the flavor, you can choose a combination of apple and hickory wood chips for your smoked ham. There are other flavors ranging from mild to intense that you can choose as per your preference.
Only premium quality ham will look, smell, and taste good. If you are a beginner, try with a standard quality ham, so you don’t waste your money and time. Once you have tested your electric smoker and understand the cooking procedure, then you can go for the premium quality, which is a bit expensive than a regular quality ham. For pre-cooked hams, the detail of seasoning is usually mentioned on the packaging. You can choose as per your taste.
Then comes the smoking time. When you are smoking a fresh ham, it will usually take 4-5 hours. But when you are smoking a pre-cooked ham, it will hardly take 30 minutes for the ham to be ready to serve. You can add the sauces once the ham is ready.
All you have to do is to pre-heat your smoker at 225 degrees for 30 minutes. Once the smoker is ready, you will have to place the ham inside and close the smoker. If you have heating grills on the smoker’s upper and lower side, then there is no need to flip the ham or change sides. But if you have the heating grill on one side only, you will have to flip the ham after 15 minutes. It will ensure equal cooking from all sides. In pre-cooked hams, there is an option for using wood chips. You can go through the instructions on the packaging of ham for guidance.
After 30 minutes, you can check the ham with the help of a knife on the thickest part. If you are satisfied with the doneness, remove the ham from the smoker or let it cook for another couple of minutes to achieve the desired doneness.
